Jamaica Nurse Advisor - Consultant

Background
The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) is a global health program of the University of Washington (UW) Department of  global Health in Seattle, Washington and operates programs and employs staff in multiple  countries in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
Since 2003, the I-TECH Caribbean program has  provided technical assistance to Ministries of Health and partners to support national health systems strengthening initiatives and a timely national HIV response through the implementation of robust  care and treatment strategies. This includes continuous quality improvement at priority care and treatment sites, clinical mentoring, in-service and pre-service training and a focused effort to  improve the comprehensive HIV care and treatment for key population groups including MSM, transgender women and sex workers. In all of its  efforts, I-TECH emphasizes strong collaborative planning, targeted needs assessments, interventions that address priority needs, sustainability, and local ownership of programs.
 
Position Overview
The Nurse Advisor Consultant will work for I-TECH approximately 5-6 days/month, with the potential for  additional days depending on funding and programmatic needs. The Nurse Advisor will participate in adapting and rolling out I-TECH’s Key Population Preceptorship program for Nurses in Jamaica and will participate in the following activities:
 
 

Self-Preparation

  • Participate in an orientation to I-TECH and the Caribbean Regional program 
  • Participate in the Trinidad KP preceptorship for nurses (would require travel to Port of Spain for 3-4 days) 
  • Participate in any additional training needed related to key population (KP) health, including the option of participating in a brief  observership at a US-based KP clinic (approximately 4-5 days)

 

Nurse Preceptorship Training Development/Adaption Process

  • Assist the KP preceptorship coordinator, as needed, regarding any scheduled focus groups for nurses
  • Establish criteria for nurse participation in the preceptorship training program
  • Assist in obtaining job descriptions for nurses from HIV care and treatment sites in Jamaica.
  • Attend and co-facilitate a meeting with KP group representatives and/or preceptorship trainers to review clinical scenarios to ensure they reflect local needs and are realistic.
  • In collaboration with the HQ training developer, review detailed notes and facilitator guides for each scenario, including clinical outline, docket, and debrief guide to determine changes needed prior to conducting pilot training sessions.
  • Review and provide feedback on the resources folder (readings, videos, etc.) for nurses as well as the trainee packet (job aids, screening tools, etc.).
  • As needed, participate in interviews and hiring process for new KP preceptorship trainers.

 

Preceptorship Implementation

  • Assist in identifying 1-2 nurses to participate in pilot sessions as trainees
  • Participate in pilot sessions as the nurse facilitator
  • Participate in follow-up meeting with KP trainers to reinforce scenarios, feedback skills, and identify challenges
  • Collaborate with the KP preceptorship coordinator to determine the nurse training schedule
  • Conduct training sessions according to schedule, estimated at two 2-day sessions per month 
  • In collaboration with the preceptorship coordinator and HQ Research and Evaluation Advisor, ensure all data collection tools are filled in completely for each training session by the nurse trainees and preceptorship trainers
  • Fill in all clinical/nursing data collection tools completely and accurately for each training session
  • Participate in regular meetings with the I-TECH team related to development and ongoing implementation of the preceptorship activities

 

Qualifications

  • Nursing degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience working in an HIV care and treatment setting
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse and underserved communities 
  • Knowledge about the needs and issues for key populations; comfort advocating on behalf of MSM, transgender and sex worker communities
  • Experience coaching or mentoring other nurses
  • Excellent counselling skills and interpersonal skills, including patience, flexibility, diplomacy, willingness to listen, ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds
  • Ability to be flexible with scheduling conference calls across multiple time zones as needed
